Unlike his first fight, Félix Auger-Aliassime wasn’t really worried about his second round rivalry at Roland-Garros.
Quebecer won unbeaten against Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli in three sets of 6-0 6-3 and 6-4.
The 9th seed reached the third round of this grand slam tournament for the first time in his career. He did the same at the US and Australian Opens and at Wimbledon.
On Sunday, he took some time to find his marks and chased down two sets to none other than Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas.
This time, the Argentinian, 155th in the world, didn’t have a chance to set up his game in the first round, which quickly ended in just 26 minutes.
Due to the intimidation and persistence of the weight of Auger-Aliassime’s shots, the player from the qualifiers finally showed his talent in the second round, which was much more contested, even though his opponent won within 65 minutes.
Auger-Aliassime broke his rival in the third game of the third set and never worried again. Ugo Carabelli saved three match points on his serve at 5-3, but the inevitable happened the next game.
While holding the balls, the 21 -year -old ended the game with a shutout.
Without being particularly brilliant, Quebecer offered a clean and stabilizing performance for the rest of the tournament with a total of 41 winning strokes, against 37 unconstrained errors. He also won 75% of the points on his first serve.
In the next round, Auger-Aliassime will face the winner of the duel currently between Croatian Borna Gogo, 223rd in the ATP, and Serbian Filip Krajinovic, 55th.
More details to come.
