Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez did not want to stretch her work day at court number 6, in Roland-Garros, on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old won with confidence two sets 6-2, in 1 h 11 min, in the second round, ahead of Czech Katerina Siniakova.
Against a doubles specialist, reigning champion in Paris, Fernandez was particularly successful in returning to service. He had five breaks on six occasions.
With the balls in hand, he broke twice but still saved 10 break points.
Fernandez ended his bout against 56th in the world with just 19 wins and 10 unforced errors.
The 17th seed also reached the third round at Porte d’Auteuil in 2020.
In her next fight, she will face compatriot Bianca Andreescu if the latter defeats Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, 14th in the world, later on Wednesday.
On both sides of the Canadians ’draw, world No. 1 race. 3 Maria Sakkari, semi-finalist last year, finished early in the second round against Czech Karolina Muchova, 81st, 7-6 (7/5), 7 -6 (7/4).
The Greek is the fifth member of the women’s top 10 not to see the third round of the Parisian grand slam, after eliminations by Barbora Krejcikova (defender), Anett Kontaveit, Ons Jabeur and Garbine Muguruza.
Muchova, former world No.19 and semi-finalist in Australia last year, confirmed her reputation as a head cutter, beating Naomi Osaka, No. 2 then, in Madrid, and world No. 1 last year. Ashleigh Barty in Melbourne.
In the next round, Muchova will face American Amanda Anisimova (20th), who fell from Osaka in the first round.
Raducanu was removed
Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, was eliminated in the second round 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 by neutral Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
The 19-year-old Briton, 12th in the world, made his debut in the Parisian major tournament and is only playing in the fourth grand slam tournament of his career.
The previous confrontation between the two players, at Indian Wells in October 2021, has already resulted in a victory for the player who is ranked 47th in the WTA.
In the next round, Sasnovich will face Angelique Kerber of Germany, who won 6-1 and 7-6 (7/2) against Elsa Jacquemot of France.
