Chilavert was sentenced to suspended years in prison for defaming the president of Conmebol

A Paraguayan judge on Wednesday convicted the former goalkeeper and presidential candidate Jose Luis Chilavert pa suspended the prison year for Defamation the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Dominguez.

In his decision, the judge Manuel Aguirrepresiding over the Sentencing Court, convicted the former Guarani National Team captain for defamation, as a “proven punishment”.

The decision acquitted former Vélez Sarsfield goalkeeper of the crimes slander and insult included in the criminal case filed by the head of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).

For the judge, Chilavert “committed the crime of defamation” between five to six months. In this context, he said he was obligated to punish Chilavert “because he attacked someone’s dignity”.

Dominguez asked for a sentence of two years in prison for his defendant and fined 100 million bail (14,600 dollars). Aguirre decided to impose one year imprisonment for Chilavertthough suspended sentence.

Instead, he hopes that he will eventually define “some rules of conduct” that former players must follow. Among them, it determined that should sign an appearance book every three months.

It did not specify whether it would ban the ex-goalkeeper from leaving the countryacknowledging that this measure may be suspended upon imposition of a “specific guarantee”.

The amount the former goalkeeper should have paid Domínguez was also not established, as the judge ensured that it should be determined based on the defendant’s income.

The final sentence will be read next Wednesday. June 1.

The Conmebol president’s request was based on expressions Chilavert made on social networks, between September and December 2020.

Chilavert accused Domínguez of Corruption through his Twitter account and in various media in Argentina and Paraguay.

His statements are not limited to Domínguez’s current role, but since he was president of the Paraguayan Football Association (APF), between 2011 and 2014.

The crimes of defamation, libel and libel are punishable in Paraguay with sentences between three months and three years in prison.
