The Carolina Hurricanes reaffirmed their dominance at home and beat the New York Rangers 3-1 on Thursday to take a 3-2 series lead.
Not only did the Hurricanes win all seven home games this playoff, they held their opponent to two goals in all games in this series.
Vincent Trocheck, Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov scored for Rod Brind’Amour’s staff.
It’s the kind of fight I’ve been waiting for, the coach said. We played decent games, but tonight was a good performance in all aspects. This is how we like to play.
Mika Zibanejad is the Rangers ’only goalcorer.
Antti Raanta was a bit busy. He only had to stop 16 shots to win. His vis-Ã -vis, Igor Shesterkin, made 31 saves.
The series returns to New York on Saturday for its sixth duel.
The Hurricanes will have a chance to get their ticket to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals. The last time the Hurricanes reached the semi-finals was in 2019 when they were swept away by the Boston Bruins.
In my opinion, we have played some battles that we need to win so far. And we did a great job with thatsaid Ryan Strome.
In the first round, the Rangers rallied from a 1-3 series deficit against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
We played hockey desperately […] We seem to enjoy this situationadded Strome.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring shorthanded with 12:57 of the first period. Jordan Staal scrapped down the wing before making a perfect overhead pass for Trocheck. The latter only had to redirect the puck to the net.
However, the Rangers ’power play returned minutes later. Just after the face-off, Artemi Panarin handed the puck to Zibanejad, who fired a one-timer from high into the circles. The Swedish center has hit the mark in the last three meetings.
In the second period, Ryan Strome thought he had given the Rangers the lead on the low shot by turning on himself. The goal, however, was not allowed due to offside.
The Hurricanes regained their lead mid -game. Teravainen received a snap from Seth Jarvis and headed a shot to the top of the net in power play.
Chances were back and forth in the third period, then Svechnikov gave the Hurricanes a two-goal cushion in a breakaway. He placed the puck between Shesterkin’s pads.
