In very good weather, the Mexican driver achieved an unparalleled time of 1 min 12 s 476/1000 on the bumpy and very narrow circuit.

He was ahead of “little local guy”, Charles Leclerc, who was fastest on Friday in his Ferrari, by 41 thousandths of a second.

Leading reigning world champion Max Verstappen was Monegasque team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. in third place. The Dutchman gave 4 tenths of a second to his teammate (+0.405).

There were no red flags in the session, but there were many incidents involving slow drivers preventing faster single-seater. The race direction is too busy.

Lance Stroll had an eventful session, with a straight turn 1 (in the forecourt of the magnificent Sainte-Dévote chapel) in the 26th minute, then in the 48th minute of the work session hit the railroad in the sequence of Rainier III swimming pool. Quebecer scored the 18th time (+2.163).

Torontonian Nicholas Latifi had to settle for the 20th time (+2.434).

The qualifying session will begin at 10 am (EDT).
