Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price is the recipient of this season’s Bill Masterton Trophy in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Since 1968, the Bill-Masterton Trophy, named in memory of a former Minnesota North Stars player who died on January 15, 1968 following an injury sustained in a game, has been awarded annually to the player who has shown the best example of determination, perseverance and sportsmanship in hockey.
Price became the sixth player in Habs history to receive this honor after Max Pacioretty (2011-2012), Saku Koivu (2001-2002), Serge Savard (1978-1979), Henri Richard (1973-1974) and Claude Provost (1967- 1968).
The Canadian number 31 overcame all sorts of difficulties this season before finally returning to the game late April 15. That was his first game since eliminating his team in the Stanley Cup Final on July 7, 2021.
Shortly after training camp began, Price admitted to having an addiction problem and signed up for the NHL assistance program. His return to action was eventually delayed by a prolonged knee injury.
Price is in contention this season with veteran defenseman Zdeno Chara of the New York Islanders and center Kevin Hayes of the Philadelphia Flyers.
