The Montreal Alouettes delighted the 11,273 spectators who gathered at Percival-Molson Stadium with a 27-26 win in their last offensive series of their last preseason game, against the Ottawa Redblacks. But not because of Vernon Adams Jr.’s performance.
Khari Jones may have insisted earlier this week that he had no doubt about the identity of No. 1 quarterback of the Alouettes, but undecided Adams, who ended his short night in attack in Montreal with three interceptions on his last four shots.
Adams was on the Alouettes ’first six offensive streaks, completing just six of 12 passes for 69 short yards. He scored the Alouettes ’lone touchdown, on a one-yard run after a good first series. However, this did not happen again.
Trevor Harris remained the same when he entered the game, also throwing an interception on his first attempt to pass. Rouge et Noir, however, did not take advantage, and the Alouettes still led 17-15 after four minutes into the fourth quarter. It doesn’t hold.
Quarterback Tyrie Adams first gave the visitors the lead with a beautiful 36-yard run. Gabriel Ballinas came on to give the visitors a nine-point advantage with less than three minutes left on a 12-yard field goal to put Ottawa at 26-17.
The Canadian League is what it is, the Alouettes scored 10 points in their last two possessions to save themselves the victory.
Dante Brown scored a 38-yard field goal first. Then, after a good 53 passes from Davis Alexander to Fabian Guerra, Ryth-Jean Giraud carried the ball two yards to tie the game. Brown came in to score the conversion for the win.
Harris only participated in three streaks. He completed three of seven passes for 61 yards. Dominique Davis, who entered the game after the break, was not bad, without also showing good things. He completed his night’s work with five completions on nine attempts for 39 yards.
Redblacks kicker Jose Maltos completed his five field goal attempts, the longest 37 yards, twice. David Côté and Mat Mengel shared the work with the Alouettes. Côté made his only attempt, for 44 yards. Mengel had punts at 26 and 42 yards, but missed 51.
Richards got attention
Entered as linebacker in the middle of the field in the second half, last -draft pick Tyrell Richards didn’t take long to make his presence felt.
As Ottawa threatened the Alouettes ’21st line, Richards violently confronted quarterback Tyrie Adams on the ground, causing him to lose the ball. Defensive end Brock Gowanlock grabbed the ball like ripe fruit and ran for 44 yards. The sequence allowed precision kicker Matt Mengel to make his second field goal of the game, from 42 yards out, which then brought the score to 16-12 in favor of the locals.
