Zverev was injured in the semi-finals at Roland Garros against Rafael Nadal on Friday.

To get back into competition as soon as possible, to make sure the ligaments have healed properly and to regain full stability in my ankle, surgery is the best option. said Zverev, on Instagram.

Zverev said he underwent surgery Tuesday in Germany, after receiving confirmation that all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle had been torn.

The 25-year-old German did not specify a timeline for his return to play.

Zverev was injured late in the second set. He was removed from the pitch in a wheelchair, then returned on crutches to say he was retiring from the game.

Finalist in New York in 2020, Zverev won gold at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
