Seventeen golfers taking part in the Saudi -funded breakaway LIV league opener in London, including Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, have been banned from PGA Tour events, U.S. Tour commissioner Jay announced Thursday. Monahan.
It is unclear, however, whether the players can re -enter the PGA Tour or not.
The exception means they will not be able to participate in the Presidents Cup, which includes a trio of South African golfers Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace.
The USGA has already indicated that players affected by this penalty will be able to participate in the United States Open next week. The PGA Tour does not host Grand Slam tournaments.
In a memo sent to PGA Tour members, Monahan said that while some golfers stopped before the first LIV Tour event in suburban London, they were less likely to participate in PGA Tour tournaments than non -members who received exemptions from sponsors.
Nine golfers resigned from the PGA Tour, along with Johnson and Sergio Garcia. Mickelson, with a lifetime membership and 45 career PGA Tour successes, is not one of them.
Players make their choices for personal financial reasons, Monahan wrote. However, they will not enjoy the same benefits, considerations, opportunities or platform as you, the PGA Member. These expectations are disrespectful to you, our supporters and our business partners.
At the heart of the dispute are the exemptions that are sometimes granted to PGA Tour golfers when they face scheduling conflicts. Players typically get three byes per season, but Monahan refused to give them to those who want to play in the first tournament of the LIV Tour because it’s part of the schedule of eight events, five of which are in the United States.
The PGA TOUR does not offer exemptions for tournaments taking place in North America.
