Favorite Iga Swiatek withdrew from the grass court tournament in Berlin with a shoulder injury, and added on Friday that he needed to rest before Wimbledon.
Swiatek clinched his second French Open title, after defeating American Coco Gauff in the final on Saturday.
Pole was supposed to start his season on the grass in the German capital, but instead opted out-as did No. 2 Anett Kontaveit, No. 3 Paula Badosa and ex-world No. 1 Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
Swiatek wrote on his Twitter account that he made this decision because he feels persistent discomfort in one shoulder.
He added that he would focus on his rehabilitation and rest to be ready for Wimbledon.
The 21-year-old is currently on a 35-game winning streak. He will seek his first title on the lawn of the All England Club, at Wimbledon, south London, where he has yet to advance to the fourth round.
