Félix Auger-Aliassime didn’t come easy in his first match at the Halle grass tournament on Tuesday, but he found a way to win.
Quebecer, seeded fourth, needed 2 h 12 min to beat American Marcos Giron 6-3, 5-7 and 6-3.
After dominating the first set thanks to two breaks, Auger-Aliassime pulled a little further into the second set. In particular, he gave three breaks to his opponent, which was very solid on his return of service.
The 21-year-old Quebecer took the lead in the third set when he smashed Giron in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. He completed his fight with 11 aces and five double faults and he also had a total of 23 unforced errors, against 28 for Giron.
In the next round, Auger-Aliassime will face another American, Mackenzie McDonald, Swiss winner Marc-Andrea Huesler.
