Canada lost to Honduras in the Nations League

Kevin Lopez and Kervin Arriaga scored to guide Honduras to a 2-1 win over Canada on Monday in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Lopez hit the target in the 13th minute in pouring rain at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano. Arriaga made it 2-0 with a goal in the 78th minute.

Jonathan David recovered one in the 86th minute and he seemed to revive Canada, but at the time of the stoppage Alistair Johnston was sent off on the second booking. Three more players received yellow cards.

Canada beat Curaçao 4-0 at BC Place on Thursday to open the Nations League. Alphonso Davies scored twice on his return to the team after being diagnosed with COVID-19-related myocarditis.

Curaçao beat Honduras 2-1 on Monday, but in the win against Canada, Honduras leads Group C with a record of two wins and one loss.

Canada beat Honduras 2-0 in January in the final round of World Cup soccer qualifying. The Canadians then confirmed their first participation in the prestigious tournament since 1986.

Canada’s only preparations for the World Cup in the final international window will be in the Nations League matches. The team is set to face Panama on June 5, but the players refused to enter the pitch due to a contract dispute with Canada Soccer.

The Nations League serves as the qualifier for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2023. The group stage will continue in March 2023 with the finals scheduled for June.
