Canadian Bianca Andreescu gave Czech Karolina Pliskova a hard time on Wednesday in the round of 16 of the Berlin Open, but she eventually gave up.
Pliskova, seeded fourth, defeated the 21-year-old Ontarian 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (9/7) in 2:11 to reach her second quarter-finals of the year.
Wimbledon runner-up last year, Pliskova had 12 aces against Andreescu and returned from a service break in the final set.
Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, served for the match 5-4 in the third set.
Not losing a serving point so far on the set, it all fell apart for the Canadian. Andreescu, ranked 69th in the world, made three unforced errors and a double fault to allow Pliskova to level the odds to 5-5.
The 30-year-old Czech won the tiebreaker. He finished the match with his third match point.
Sixth-seeded Daria Kasatknia of Russia and No. 7 American Coco Gauff won their second and first round matches, respectively.
