Nicolas Guy Turbide in gold in the worlds, Aurélie Rivard is resting

Quebecer Nicolas Guy Turbide won a gold medal in the 100m backstroke (S13 category) at the Para-swimming worlds held at the Olympic Aquatic Complex in Madeira, Portugal, on Wednesday.

With his time of 1 min 17/100, Turbide just finished ahead of Dutchman Thomas van Wanrooij (1: 00.55). Ukrainian Oleksii Virchenko, at 1: 00.95, won bronze.

The Canadian swimmer has improved his last two results in this event in major international competitions. Turbide won silver at the Paralympic Games last summer in Tokyo, as well as at the final Worlds in 2019 in London.

Aurélie Rivard is still resting

Quebec swimmer Aurélie Rivard remained at rest on Wednesday, hours after her retirement in the 400m freestyle (S10) final.

Wayne Lomas, national coach at Swimming Canada, said the athlete, who had to be rescued from the pool area after the event, was still at the hotel under the supervision of a Canadian team doctor.

We all hope he can return to competition this week, Mr. Lomas said in a statement given to Radio-Canada Sports. We will provide an update when we have made a decision.

About 150m away on Tuesday, Rivard came out of the pool and received help from rescuers. They wrapped him in a blanket and put on an oxygen mask. Swimming Canada later advised it to withdraw from the event due to a medical concernswithout giving further details.
