Canadian runner Gabriela DeBues-Stafford announced Wednesday that she has suffered a stress injury to her sacrum. His season is probably over.
The 26-year-old Ontarian said he was furious a few weeks before the world athletics championships, from July 15 to 25, in Eugene, Oregon.
I’m damn devastated, he wrote on his Instagram account. My 1500 at Classique Prefontaine this year shows that we are ready for big things. I was excited to know what it was, a podium, a personal best, a North American record. Going from my best form to now having trouble walking for a week is heartbreaking.
This is the first injury of its kind for DeBues-Stafford, 5th in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Injuries don’t happen in a day, the young athlete wrote. Our most likely theory is that they are in perfect condition, partly mechanical and stress related and partly due to undernourishment, not enough sleep and also a lot of stress. Stress creates funny phenomena in the body.
Holding seven Canadian records, DeBues-Stafford finished 3rd at the Prefontaine Classic in May before leaving the competition in Hengelo, the Netherlands, and in Rome.
He recently moved to Victoria to train. He said he wanted to get rid of the stress caused by the suspension of his Portland sparring partner Shelby Houlihan.
DeBues-Stafford trained with the prestigious Bowerman Athletic Club for two years in Oregon, but he said he was bothered by the fact Houlihan remains tied to the club despite a four-year suspension imposed in June 2021.
