Hadwin birdied three consecutive rows at the end of his front nine and paired up to score 66. He outscored a group of five golfers including Rory McIlroy by one stroke.

Dustin Johnson was the best player among those who participated in the first tournament of the LIV circuit with a round of 68.

Phil Mickelson ended a difficult day with a score of 78. This is the sixth consecutive time he has played an over-par first round at the US Open.

Hadwin got his tournament ticket in exchange after Paul Casey, who beat him in the Dallas Qualifier, had to withdraw due to back pain.

This is the third time in six major tournaments that a Canadian has topped the standings at the end of a round. Mackenzie Hughes tied for 1st after 54 holes at the US Open last year, and Corey Conners had the best opening round at the 2021 PGA Championship.
