The Montreal Alouettes reached the win, but David Côté’s missed field goal kept the Toronto Argonauts ahead, who won 20-19 on Thursday at BMO Field.
Côté’s attempt from the 21-yard line was unsuccessful. The Alouettes could take a 21-20 lead in about 15 seconds to play, but the ball went to the left of the posts, all after catches of 25 and 21 yards from Eugene Lewis and Hergy Mayama – that to Lewis in a third down with 10 yards left.
The Montrealers tried minutes before tying the game with a two-point convert after a sneak by Dominique Davis that made it 20-18, but Trevor Harris’s pass didn’t work for Jake Wieneke.
Argos may have put the game out of reach of the Alouettes, but Boris Bede missed two field goals late in the third quarter and mid -fourth. The Toronto kicker was however important to them as he scored 12 of his team’s 20 points, including 6 at the end of the second quarter with two consecutive field goals due to interception by Tarvarus McFadden.
The loss brought the Alouettes record to 0-2, after a three-point loss to Calgary.
The club will play for the first time at home next Thursday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The late catches got Montreal quarterback Trevor Harris to 270 on aerial yards, more than one of his counterpart McLeod Bethel-Thompson.
Lewis had 127 passing yards and Reggie White had 83.
For Argos (1-0), Andrew Harris had 87 rushing yards, while Markeith Ambles and Kurleigh Gittens added 67 and 66 passing yards.
