The marmot is the mascot of the Canadian Grand Prix. However, this Friday, the flagship animal in Montreal almost turned into food for the mighty Formula 1 cars, when a marmot crossed the track as a Ferrari and an Alpine approached.

The biggest fright came from Carlos Sainz, who was advancing on the left of the track and almost met the marmot in an area like the island of Notre Dame, where the Gilles Villeneuve circuit is located, in the middle of a large river, which is a perfect place for this fauna.

However, the marmot chose a good meeting point: without braking or maneuvering in the middle of the first free practice sessions of the Canadian Grand Prix. That’s why, surely, the animal managed to cross the track from one side to the other without being stepped on by Sainz or Fernando Alonso, the other who was passing right next to it, and it all remained in a funny anecdote.

The marmot took the spotlight in a first contact of the drivers with the track, with the best time signed by Max Verstappen, so much so that Formula 1 shared the moment of its appearance on its social networks, making sure that they were missed and they too he called her “Gary”. “We miss our furry friends in Montreal,” they wrote.

Fans who flocked to the circuit were also happy to see the marmot victorious, even the one who went to the stands disguised as the area’s flagship animal.
