The Tunisian Ons Jabeur, first seed and 4th player in the world took advantage of the abandonment through injury in the final of the Swiss Belinda Bencic (17th) to win the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin on Sunday.
Jabeur led 6-3, 2-1 when Bencic, injured in the left ankle on a slip just before the first set point, retired due to too much pain after less than an hour of play.
After becoming the first player in the Arab world to win a WTA 1000 in Madrid last May, Jabeur won her third title at the age of 27. She is gaining confidence heading into Wimbledon, which begins on June 27 and where she reached the quarter-finals in 2021.
The most important thing to me is that she’s okaysaid the Tunisian who immediately helped her opponent by applying ice to her ankle after her retirement.
She would’ve pushed me to the limit of three innings todayadded Jabeur about an opponent, two years his junior but who was playing his 15th final on the circuit in the German capital.
