Max Verstappen signed on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit on Île Notre-Dame on Sunday, his sixth victory of the season to make the 2022 edition of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Canada his own.
For the Red Bull team, this is a sixth victory in a row. Accentuating his lead at the top of the general classification after nine races, Verstappen narrowly edged out Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) and Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), seven-time world champion.
It was the first event presented in Montreal in three years. The annual meeting was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the great operations of the afternoon was carried out by Charles Leclerc (Ferrari). Starting in 19th position due to the penalty imposed following the modifications made to the powertrain of his car, the Monegasque reached the finish in 5th place, just over 15 seconds behind the winner of the day and just ahead of the Briton George Russell (Mercedes).
From the Canadians’ perspective, Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Nicholas Latifi (Williams) finished the race in 10th and 16th place, respectively.
As a result, Stroll collects ranking points for the second time in three participations in his national grand prix.
Three competitors, Sergio Perez (Red Bull, transmission, 9th lap), Mick Schumacher (Haas, engine, 20th lap) and Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri, off track, 49th lap) did not complete the race.
More details to come.
