Wimbledon breaks tradition

As the qualifiers got underway in Roehampton, the big stars of the circuit were already beginning to beat the third Grand Slam of the season. Serbian Novak Djokovic, reigning champion, and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, maximum winner of “majors”, with 22 titles, trained this Monday in the Aranghi Parka tennis complex located next to the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Although in the next few days they could have gathered on the main fields of the AELTC, which they had never been able to do before the competition.

This is how the organizers of the London Major decided to break with an old tradition and allow players to train in the club’s center and field 1, which until this edition were reserved only for the most important matches of the tournament.

Last year the property’s most important pitch was more slippery than the rest and there were two players who suffered serious injuries and had to retire from matches, the Frenchman Adriano Mannarinoin the match against Roger Federer, and the American Serena Williams.

Additionally, the former number one and 23 major winner has injured her leg so badly that her recovery has left her off the pitch for nearly a year and, in fact, Wimbledon will mark her comeback.

To prevent stories like these from repeating themselves, the AELTC decided to open the fields the week before the race so that the lawn “spends” a little and is not so slippery in the early rounds.

Until this year, tradition had it that the central court was inaugurated the weekend before the tournament with a women’s doubles match, in which the players were chosen by lot from among the members of the exclusive club.
