Canada’s Bianca Andreescu beat Italy’s Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the grass court tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany.
Andreescu broke Trevisan’s serve six times in nine occasions during the match.
The 22-year-old Ontarian only faced two break points, which she was unable to erase.
A semi-finalist at Roland Garros earlier this month, Trevisan struggled on serve throughout the 1 hour and 15 minute match. She committed four double faults and only converted 38.2% of the points with her first serve.
Andreescu will now face Katie Swan. The Briton, ranked 233rd in the world, created a surprise by eliminating American Sloane Stephens in three sets of 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2.
Marino eliminated at Eastbourne
Rebecca Marino’s journey at Eastbourne came to a halt in the second round.
The Canadian had quite a challenge in front of her with the Italian Camila Giorgi, 12th seed of the tournament.
And the logic was respected despite a commendable effort from Marino. The British Columbian lost in straight sets 5-7, 4-6.
Marino had 7 service aces, while his opponent committed 12 double faults. But Giorgi took advantage of 73% of his first serves to win the point.
The Italian now has a quarter-final meeting with Spaniard Garbine Muguruza (no 5)
In addition, the American Serena Williams made her return to competition in Eastbourne, in doubles, a year after her retirement from Wimbledon following an injury.
The 40-year-old seven-time Wimbledon champion teamed with Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur and prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 13-11 over Czech Marie Bouzkova and Spain’s Sara Sorribes in the first round.
This tournament should allow the former world No. 1, who has fallen to 1204th place, to pick up the pace before lining up for a grand slam in London next week.
