The British Open will allow golfers on the LIV circuit to participate

Golfers who have joined the Saudi-funded professional tour will be able to compete in the British Open next month, organizers said on Wednesday.

The US Open also accepted players banned by the PGA Tour during the tournament presented last week.

Golfers who have a bye or who have earned their place through the qualification process for the 150th British Open will be able to play the tournament in St. AndrewsR&A chief operating officer Martin Slumbers said in a statement.

The oldest major tournament in the world will begin on July 14.

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson headlined the inaugural LIV Tour golf tournament earlier this month in suburban London. This was won by 2011 Masters Tournament champion Charl Schwartzel, taking home the $4.75 million prize pool. This circuit is financed by Saudi interests.

Mickelson, the holder of six career Grand Slam titles, missed qualifying for the weekend rounds at the U.S. Open last week. He won the British Open in 2013.
