Wiebe threw a cold shower on the spectators in New Brunswick after an exciting extra period. He beat goaltender Nikolas Hurtubise with a shot over his left shoulder to get his hat-trick.

He is an important member of our team, a power forward with good skating and good shooting. He can do a lot of things, Oil Kings head coach Brad Lauer said. He works hard and does things well. Tonight, he was rewarded for all that.

The Oil Kings (0-1-0-1) thus prevented the Sea Dogs (1-0-1-0) from confirming their place in the semi-finals. The Western champions have two points in the standings after two games, while the host team has four.

The intensity increased in this third game of the tournament, with the sense of urgency already felt on both sides.

It’s heartbreaking for our team. She worked so hard, said Sea Dogs head coach Gardiner MacDougall. But we can retain many positive elements.

Josh Lawrence and Raivis Kristians Ansons each had a goal and an assist. William Dufour also moved the ropes for the Sea Dogs (1-0-1-0), who came from a two-goal deficit in the first period. Hurtubise made 27 saves.

We liked how we bounced back. We liked how we showed character. But you have to avoid the penalty bench. We allowed two goals when we were shorthanded. It hurts.

On the side of the Oil Kings (0-1-0-1), Carter Souch also collected a goal and two assists. Sebastian Cossa stopped 36 shots.

The Oil Kings also overcame a poor performance in a 4-3 loss to the Shawinigan Cataractes on Tuesday.

Our performance [mardi] was unacceptable,” said Oil Kings forward Carter Souch, who scored a goal and added two assists against the Sea Dogs. We needed everyone tonight and we put in a full effort for almost 70 minutes.

blow for blow

Wiebe, on the power play, and Souch had given the Oil Kings the lead early in the game, but Ansons and Lawrence brought everyone back to square one with two goals within 25 seconds.

Dufour then gave the Sea Dogs the lead midway through the first frame with a low mitt side shot. Wiebe, however, returned to the charge in the second period, again on the numerical superiority.

Although the replay showed that his clearance had grazed the glass window before disappearing into the crowd, Yan Kuznetsov found himself in the penalty box for delaying the game when Wiebe scored the equalizer.

Hurtubise played luck a few times in net for the Sea Dogs. He saw shots from Brendan Kuny and Simon Kubicek ringing off the posts.

For his part, Cossa was solid after the first period. He received a good helping hand from Kaiden Guhle early in the third period when the defenseman intercepted a pass thanks to a nice drop when the Sea Dogs attacked with two against the goaltender.

The two goalkeepers were the stars in overtime until Wiebe settled the dispute.

Thursday, the Shawinigan Cataractes, champions of the QMJHL, will face the Hamilton Bulldogs, champions of Ontario.
