Canada’s Penny Oleksiak and Kelsey Lauren Wog narrowly missed the podium at the FINA World Championships on Thursday in Budapest.

The race was won by Australian Mollie O’Callaghan (52.67s) ahead of Sweden’s Sarah Sjoestroem (52.80s). This is a second gold medal for O’Callaghan in Hungary. The 18-year-old swimmer also triumphed in the 4 x 100m on Saturday.
The other representative of the maple leaf in the running, Kayla Sanchez (53.59 s), took 6th place.
For his part, Wog finished 4th in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2 min 3 s 86/100.
The Regina athlete gave up 68 hundredths to the American Kate Douglass (2:23.20) who received the bronze. Her compatriot Lilly King (2:22.41) took gold, while Australia’s Jenna Strauch (2:23.04) won silver.
A good day for Liendo Edwards
Joshua Liendo Edwards, from Markham, Ontario, can say mission accomplished. The 19-year-old swimmer passed his qualifications in the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.
He was the fastest in his group in the 100m butterfly. His time of 50.88 s puts him in the top eight, earning him a ticket to the final. In the 50m freestyle, he covered the distance in 21.73s, just behind Benjamin Proud (21.42s) and Lorenzo Zazzeri (21.70s).
Both finals will take place on Friday.
Among the women, Kylie Masse also successfully qualified in the 200m backstroke. For her part, Quebecer Katherine Savard did not get a fast enough time to take part in the 50m butterfly final.
A 14th medal for the United States in the relay
The Americans, world record holders, were crowned world champions in the 4 x 200 m.
Drew Kibler, Carson Foster, Trenton Julian and Kieran Smith edged the Aussies and Brits to the finish line.
Thanks to this title, the United States, far ahead in the medal table, won their 14th world title since the start of the worlds.
