Initially the game was to be played at Mané Garrincha – the same spot where Gonzalo Higuain scored for Argentina beating Belgium in the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup – but the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) requested the change and the new venue was agreed upon by the Conmebol Board members.
The change request was capitalized by the Córdoba government, which will once again host the transcendental match, as it had done in 2020. On that occasion, the champion was Defense and Justice but the difference with the next final will be the public: this time the match will be able to count on the public of the clubs.
The contest will distribute $ 60 million and the champion of the 2022 edition will pocket a prize of 5 million dollars, one million more than the bag that took the Atletico Paranaense when he captured the 2021 tournament. In this edition, all clubs that participated in the group stage received $ 900,000.
“The sustained increase in prize money for participating and winning clubs, the growing reach of broadcasts and the high level of competition of the teams are factors that show the expansion of this continental tournament.”the entity said in a statement.
For its part, the final of the Copa Libertadores 2022 will be played on Saturday 29 October at the Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo stadium, in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil.
