The Athletics World Championships began to be played in 1983 and since that first tournament, held in Helsinki, Argentina has never missed the appointment. And there will be the 18th edition, which will be held between this Friday and Sunday 24 July, in Eugene, Oregon. Nine national representatives will be present at the event, with Germán Chiaraviglio and Belén Casetta at the head of the delegation, the second largest in the history of our country.
In addition to Santa Fe, who will compete for the fourth time in pole vaulting, and Mar del Plata, who will run the 3,000 meters hurdles, in the blue and white list there are Florencia Borelli (5,000 meters), Carolina Lozano (3 thousand with obstacles), Carlos Layoy (high jump), Eulalio Munoz (marathon), Joaquín Gomez (hammer throw), Giovanni Manuel Cano (20 kilometers in March) e Ignazio Carballo (shot put).
With nine members, the Argentine team was just one short of the record of 10 participants London 2017. He was close to improving that presence, as there were three others who had qualified, but didn’t travel for different reasons.

the long distance runner Federico Bruno, who had secured his place in the 1,500 meters, has not recovered from a virus that had already marginalized him from the Ibero-American in La Nucía in May. Marathon runner Joaquín Arbe was unable to travel because he did not complete the visa procedures to enter the United States. Y Diana Ocampowho also had the ticket for the 42.195 kilometer test, decided to skip the appointment to focus on shorter distances in the coming months.
The World Cup was supposed to be held in August last year, but was eventually postponed in order not to collide with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which were postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Y for the first time it will be played on American soila curious fact considering this the North American country has won the medal table in 15 of the last 13 editions. He was second behind Russia in Edmonton, Canada, 2001 and third, behind Kenya and Jamaica, in Beijing 2015.
On this occasion the appointment is in the mythical stadium Hayward Fieldone of the most traditional venues for athletics in that country, located on the campus of University of Oregonbuilt in 1919 and reopened, after its renovation, in August 2020.
Over there, The Argentines will try to make history and get the first medal of the Azzurri and Bianconeri Athletics World Cup, which has had several finalists in the past. One of them, Chiaraviglio, one of the expert members of the delegation that will compete in Eugenio.
The man from Santa Fe, world champion under 18 in 2003 and under 20 in 2006, achieved his best senior performance at the Beijing 2015, when he was ninth in the final with a jump of 5.65 meters, 10 centimeters less than his personal best (5.75). In that tournament, Germán Lauro (9th in shooting) and Braian Toledo (10th in javelin) also reached the finals of their disciplines.
At 35 Chiaraviglio, who secured his qualification by winning the South American from Ecuador 2021 with 5.55 meters, arrives at the World Championships in a great sporting moment. Last week, he finished fourth at the tournament in Landau, Germany, with a best time of 5.60m. His last participation in the World Cup was in London 2017, when he finished 26th.
At that appointment five years ago in the English capital, Casetta shone, another of the Argentine talents who will compete in Oregon. La Mar del Plata surprised in that championship, reaching the final of the 3,000 meters hurdles (it finished 11th) and beating the South American record twice, first in the standings (9m35s78) and then in the final (9m25s99, which a few days ago improved the Brazilian Tatiane Raquel Da Silva).
Casetta, 27, secured a ticket to Eugene by obtaining the minimum score at the Iberoamericano de La Nucía, where he scored 9m29s60.
In the same test it will be performed Carolina Lozano, who will make his World Cup debut after qualifying through the world rankings. The 26-year-old from Rosario reached her personal best on May 25 in Huelva, Spain, 9m42s88.
Giovanni Manuel Cano He will play his sixth World Cup. The 34-year-old from Tucuman competed in the 20km march in Berlin 2009 (40th), Daegu 2011 (36th), Moscow 2013 (46th), Beijing 2015 (42nd) and London 2017 (46th). He too qualified for this tournament based on the ranking, set his best time this year in early May, in Rio Maior, Portugal, with 1h27m52.
Florence Borelli He made his debut in a World Cup in Doha 2019 and failed to enter the final of 5,000 meters (he was 25th). The 29-year-old from Mar del Plata will try to improve that result in the American tournament, which she also entered in the ranking.
In early June, in a match held in Manchester, he ran that distance in 15m23s83 – it was the bronze – and set a new Argentine record. To a great extent, in April he had also improved the national and South American 3,000m mark in Mar del Plata, with 8m59s10. And in February he had performed the Seville marathon in 2h26m54, record also for our country and minimum for the World Cup, even if in the end he decided not to do that test in Eugene and to concentrate on the track.
Who will run, for the first time, the legendary 42.195 kilometers of the World Cup will be Eulalio Munoz. Tokyo Olympic, the 26-year-old from Chubut has obtained a ticket for the race that will start this Friday by reaching the minimum score in the Valencia Marathon, in December 2020, in which he stopped the clock at 2h9m59.
The other three Argentines also qualified thanks to the world rankings of their respective disciplines. Carlos Layoy, Argentina’s record holder in the high jump (2.25 meters), achieved his best score of the season at the end of April, when he won a tournament in Sao Paulo with 2.21 meters. Earlier this week, he scored 2.20 meters in a match in the French town of Carquefou.
Joaquín Gomez, 25, will compete in his second World Cup. He was 31st in Doha 2019 when he threw his hammer at 70.17 meters and failed to make it through the qualifying round. In the South American Grand Prix held in April in Concepción del Uruguay, he scored 74.13, his best launch of 2022.
Ignazio Carballo He was the last to join the delegation. Cordovan will have his World Cup baptism at the age of 27 and arrive at a good time. At the end of May, at the Iberian-American in Alicante, he launched the shot at 20.04 meters and set his personal best.
