Germán Chiaraviglio of Santa Fe failed to top the rankings in the pole vault of the XVIII World Athletics Championships which is taking place at Hayward Field in Eugene (Oregon). Thus ended the performance of the Argentine representatives in this race which will have the last day of competitions on Sunday.
Chiaraviglio, Olympic representative in Beijing 2008, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020, managed to jump 5.30 meters on the second attempt, but then failed to exceed 5.50, thus being 16th and penultimate in the group. (only in front of the German Torben Blech, who did not register a valid jump).
The 35-year-old athlete was far from the 5.75 meters that represented the cut-off height and was joined by the 12 jumpers who will compete for the title in this discipline on Sunday starting at 21:25 (Argentine time). The main favorites for the title are the Swedish Armand Duplantis (holder of the world record in the specialty) and the Brazilian Thiago Braz da Silva, Olympic champion in Tokyo.

For Chiaraviglio, who had qualified for this tournament by obtaining the gold medal at the South American Championship in Guayaquil 2021, those 5.75 meters are also his best historical milestone: he obtained it on 21 July 2015 and allowed him to conquer the silver medal. at the Pan American Games in Toronto.
“I am very excited to think about getting as close as possible to the top 12. I know it is very difficult because the level of the event is very strong, but in 2022 I jumped twice above 5.60 and I would like to be able to do the best time if possible. of the year in the World Championship. This is a great challenge. My goal is to go height after height and get as close as possible to qualify for the final. It is very difficult, but not impossible ”, the Argentine had hoped before the race.
This was the fourth participation in a world championship in athletics for the best pole vault in Argentine history: he was 12th in Osaka 2007 (with a jump of 5.55 meters), reached the final and finished 9th in Beijing 2015 (5, 65) and 11th in London 2017 (5.45).
In addition, the santafesino had had exceptional interventions in the Youth World Cup. In the under 18 category he was champion at Sherbrooke 2003. As under 20 he finished second in Grosseto 2004 and won the title in Beijing 2006.
