An hour and 51 minutes was enough for Coria, 30, to sack Garín, 26, in a duel in which he played more solidly, especially from the baseline, was more effective with his serve and was able to exploit holes and the weak points of Chilean tennis. But it took three meeting points to seal the victory, after his rival saved two in the 12th game of the second set.
Rosario scores against the Chilean, whom he had beaten in the two previous duels played: in the quarter-finals of enoughin June last year, with 6-4, 4-6 and 6-2, and in the first round of Rio de Janeiroin February of this 2022, with 6-2 and 6-0.
Garin, who added his second consecutive defeat in two sets since his great performance at Wimbledon (reached the quarter-finals), only managed to prevail in the first meeting between the two, in the quarter-finals of Rio de Janeiro 2020, for 2-6, 6-3 and 7-5.
Coria, champion this year in the Milanese challenger and semifinalist in ATP of Marrakechcame from the second round defeat of Bastad and debut in Hamburg ATP 500. And he started his first participation in the Austrian tournament on the right foot, which has seven Argentines on his list of champions.
Guillermo Vilas has won it four times, 1977, 1980, 1982 and 1983. And the other six have raised the trophy once each: Horace de la Pena in 1990; Guillermo Coria, brother of Fede, in 2003; Gaston Gaudio in 2004; Agostino Calleri in 2006; Juan Monaco in 2007; and Juan Martin Del Potro in 2008.
Whoever was left wanting to go on was Hernan Casanova (208), who qualified to enter the main draw of an ATP tournament for the first time, after more than a decade of fighting to make that dream come true. But he failed to extend his winning streak and fell to the Austrian JUrij Rodionov (145 °) for 6-4 and 6-2.
