Bagnis had not won a single match in the last four tournaments played before his arrival in Umag, but in Croatia he broke through and reached the top eight.

In addition to Alcaraz, who defends the title won in 2021, three Italian tennis players have installed themselves in the semifinals: Jannik Sinner, Franco Agamenone and Giulio Zeppieri.

It was Agamenone who took first place by eliminating compatriot Marco Cecchinato with a categorical score of 6-2, 6-1 in just an hour and 17 minutes of play.

The 29-year-old tennis player born in Río Cuarto, Argentina, and who adopted Italian citizenship in 2020 after settling in Lecce, continues to surprise and is one step away from defining the tournament that is played on clay.

Agamenone, who is 136th in the standings and had already eliminated the Argentine Sebastián Báez, eliminated a Cecchinato who is in 151st place in the standings and had just beaten compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, the brand new winner of his first title on the circuit in the ATP 500 in Hamburg.

The Italian “Cordovan” will face compatriot Sinner, tenth in the standings and winner of the Spanish Roberto Carballes Baena for 6-4 and 7-6 (7/5).

Another Italian who has secured a ticket for the semifinals is Giulio Zeppieri, who in another Italo-Iberian duel defeated Bernabé Zapata Miralles with halves of 7-5 and 6-4.

Zeppieri will then try to take down an Alcaraz who is experiencing the best year of his young career, champion this season in Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona and Masters 1000 in Miami and Madrid.
