With a massive welcome, Luis Suárez came back this Sunday in Uruguay to join the Nacional squad, the club where 17 years ago he began his career as one of the most important strikers of his generation, and one of the most important in the history of Uruguayan football.

“On Sunday we will present him at home. The monumental demonstration of affection that has been seen on social networks will now be a ‘giant’ hug from the stands”, announced last Thursday through the social networks “el Bolso” when he put the tickets for the parties in its stadium, the Gran Parque Central.

The 35-year-old forward, who was part of the Atlético de Madrid squad until the end of May and was in talks with River, I arrive directly from Barcelona airport, with the private plane of his friend Lionel Messi, to Carrasco international airport a few minutes before 11am. There, club authorities, family and close friends awaited him.

The caravan started at the Avenida de las Américas roundabout in front of the entrance to the “old airport”, following Avenida a la Playa, Rambla and Boulevard José Batlle y Ordóñez to then reach the tricolor stadium. At all times, a crowd accompanied the journey with demonstrations of support and affection for the “Gunman”.

At the stadium, a historic welcome: more than 15,000 fans wearing the masks of the scorer welcomed the idol with a good candombero rhythm in the songs.

With the aim of reaching the World Cup in Qatar with football continuity and after excluding multiple offers from important clubs, the Nacional alternative has begun to pass from utopia to reality.

Suárez was looking to continue in high competition, having turned down several European offers. Thus, the Uruguayan club guarantees ownership in at least 16 matches, between Copa Sudamericana and local leagues, in the 100 days preceding the World Cup, in a short contract that no other team would have accepted.

The revolution of the gunslingers

The arrival of Suárez has revolutionized social networks and also the national headquarters: in less than 24 hours, the Exchange registered 5,000 new members and sold just under 1,000 more seats for the rest of the season.
