Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was killed Saturday. He was hit by a dump truck while walking on a South Florida highway.
A State Highway Patrol spokesman confirmed the crash, which occurred on Highway 595. Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Don’t know why the footballer was there. The accident caused the highway to close for several hours.
Haskins agent Cedric Saunders confirmed the death to ESPN. The Steelers also released a statement offering their condolences to the family.
The 24-year-old was a 2019 first-round pick by Washington and was 2-5 in his first season. He then went 1-5 in six starts next season before he was released.
The Steelers gave Haskins a chance to relaunch his career in January 2021. He is the third quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph. He was only in uniform for one game, a tie against the Detroit Lions, when Roethlisberger’s name was listed as a COVID-19-infected player.
Both head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert praised Haskins for his hard work and improvement in his game since joining the team. The Steelers offered him a new one -year contract in March. He had to fight Mitch Trubinsky for a place in the formation.
Haskins is not formally training this week in Florida with Trubinsky and several position players.
