“If it was the smell of food, I wouldn’t complain”, the Australian told referee Jaume Campistol. “It’s marijuana. When an athlete has asthma, obviously it’s not ideal,” he complained, pointing to a section of Flushing Meadows in New York where they were supposedly smoking.

However, the state of New York legalized use of marijuana for recreational purposes, so none of them were breaking the law. “As a courtesy to the players, please refrain from smoking around the pitch,” was Campistol’s response to the statement, his voice amplified throughout the stadium.

During his career, Kyrgios has experienced numerous episodes with audiences. Even the spectator accused of drunkenness admitted that he intended to sue the tennis player for “unfounded and reckless accusations”.

But that wasn’t Kyrgios’ only controversy: in a change of sides, the Australian had another unpleasant attitude.
