Thomas Tuchel ceased to be Chelsea’s technical director following their debut defeat in the Champions League.
Chelsea sacked their coach, German Thomas Tuchel, on Wednesday after Londoners lost 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb last night, as confirmed by the British club. The unexpected news was confirmed today in a statement published on the official Twitter account of the London entity, after the bad start of the German coach’s squad in the Premier League and Champions League.
On behalf of all Chelsea, the club would like to express its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts with the club.
From the Chelsea board they insist that the change was made “at the right time”, when the club is going through a transition to leave behind the era of the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich until this new phase with its new owners, American tycoons Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.
“At a time when the owners have reached 100 days since they took control of the club and as they continue the hard work to bring it forward, the new owners believe it is time to make this transition,” the note explains.
The club adds that “Thomas will rightfully have a place in Chelsea history having won the Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup in his day here” and is committed to finding a replacement as soon as possible.
Chelsea clarify that “there will be no further comments until a new manager is appointed”.
The team is sixth in the Premier League after having already been defeated twice in the first six games of the competition, despite being one of the teams that has strengthened the most in the summer market.
