With just 58 days left before the ball starts rolling in Qatar, FIFA is starting to make that clear this World Cup will be marked by fire for its technological innovations. With the VAR already established in football and the amazement at the use of artificial intelligence to detect offside, another project dedicated to the protagonists appears.
is approx FIFA Player, an application dedicated to players participating in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, from which they will have access to individual data and statistics – and in real time – on their performance in the maximum appointment. It was announced this Friday and, with some continental antecedents, it will be used for the first time in a World Cup.
The app has been in development and refinement for several years and was born out of FIFPRO recommendations, based on the desire of players for easy access to their performance data. The International Union of Footballers has promoted this project on the basis of the Charter of Player Data Rights and has given the green light from FIFA.
The role of FIFA Player will have to do with output after each match optimized data parameters, which are calculated from each matchand that are captured by a team of FIFA performance analysts. These specialists have already played a similar role during the latest edition of the Arab Cup, held last year in Qatar.
The statement released by FIFA at the time read as follows: “A team of experts is analyzing every player during every second of every FIFA Arab Cup 2021 match; a groundbreaking innovation that is sparking a wave of new perspectives on performance, in in line with FIFA’s vision of increasing global competitiveness through technology.
Now, from this updated system for the World Cup, Physical performance metrics will also be available, which are collected through an in-stadium tracking system and optimized football intelligence. From FIFA it was indicated: “This system it is extremely accurate and consists of several cameras positioned around the pitch to maximize player coverage.
The application, already presented to the participating teams, will take care of the collection of parameters in relation to the definitions contained in the FIFA Football Language. According to what emerged, players will be able to see themselves reflected when “they make a movement to receive, break the opponent’s lines by distributing the ball, and also when they put pressure on an opponent in possession of the ball”.
The Deputy Secretary General, Simon Colosimo, spoke on behalf of FIFPRO. The Australian leader specified: “FIFA Player will offer a new resource to players participating in the World Cup. I am confident that the collaboration between FIFA and FIFPRO in the field of player data will continue to benefit players in a wide range of sectors. “
Therefore, this intelligence data created by FIFA’s football performance analysis and knowledge team will become another tool for the protagonists. Technologically, this World Cup will undoubtedly be the most important of all. It remains to be seen whether it will also be up to par in terms of football.
