john carmaclegend of the video game industry and one of the fathers of Oculus virtual reality, hours after making the decision to leave Objective attacked with a harsh letter that spared no criticism of the conduct of Mark Zuckerberg.
The engineer posted a statement on Facebook in which he Claimed to be ‘tired of fighting’ and feeling “frustrated with the way things are done” at the company, which led to the decision to abruptly resign.
Carmack was until a few hours ago a consultant in the technology department of Reality Labs but his differences with Mark Zuckerberg on strategic issues seem irreconcilable. This is demonstrated by the letter in which he explains the reasons for his resignation after a decade of work as a virtual reality consultant in the technological field.
The resignation of John Carmack from Meta
The software engineer joined Oculus’ management team in 2013, and just a year later the company was bought by Meta, so Carmack joined Zuckerberg’s team.
Now, the creator of popular video games such as Wolfestein 3D and Doom has abandoned technology to focus on Keen Technologies, a start-up he created with the aim of develop artificial intelligence similar to human.
Five years after Meta bought Oculus for $2 billion, Carmack stepped down as the company’s chief technology officer and became a consultant. At that time, the engineer announced that he would spend most of his time developing strong artificial intelligence, also known as artificial general intelligence or IAG.
In Carmack’s press release, a strong discontent is perceived for the recent changes that have taken place in the company. However, the engineer also wanted to acknowledge the achievements of the Quest 2 release.
The VR headset is “almost exactly what I wanted from the beginning: a standalone headset with reverse tracking, (nearly) 4K panel, and affordable,” he said in the statement.
Recognition of the successful product didn’t stop Carmack from criticizing Meta’s “ludicrous number of people and resources.” “There’s no sugarcoating this, I think our organization is operating half as effectively as would make me happy,” he adds. The engineer assured that he tried to change things but it was impossible, forcing him to resign.
“It’s been a struggle for me. I have a say at the highest level, so it seems like I should be able to move things around, but obviously I’m not persuasive enoughhe says in the statement. Carmack believes his influence has been positive but never enough.
“A lot of the things I complain about end up coming back after a year or two. I’ve never been able to end stupidity before it causes harmnor to mark a direction and make a team join it”, he ruled in his farewell.
