Big companies like Microsoft and Google indicate that chatbots artificial intelligence (AI) I’m a co-pilot or helper for users in general, but many experts point out that this type of technology will change many professions, whether it’s making their jobs easier and faster, replacing employees, or creating new professions.

Telemarketers, accountants, translators, teachers, programmers, and even investors are some of the professions that studies have indicated will change as AI becomes more popular.

The capabilities of GPT-4, the latest version of OpenAI -creators of ChatGPT-, can solve “new and difficult tasks” with a “human level of performance” in fields such as mathematics, programming, medicine, law and psychology, according to a an article published in March by researchers at Microsoft – company that has invested billions in OpenAI.

New York University professor Robert Seamans participated in a study on how language shapers like ChatGPT, GPT-4, Bing and Bard will affect professions.

“Telemarketing was the occupation we found most exposed to changes in language shaping or advances in language shaping, followed by other professions such as teachingSeamans points out to EFE.

The top five professions in the rankings are telemarketers, university professors of English language and literature, university professors of foreign languages, University teachers of history and university professors of law.

Other non-education unions that were among the twenty hardest-hit positions were sociology, political science, mediators, and judges.

However, Seamans indicates that this does not mean that these jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence, but what can happen is that it is “complementary to the work that is being done”.

Another study released last week, which also looked at the “labor market impact of language models,” indicates that office workers are among the professionals whose careers are most exposed to the capabilities of generative AI, as at least the half of the accounting tasks could be completed a lot faster with this technology.

The same goes for mathematicians, interpreters, writers, and just about anyone 20% of the workforce of the United States, according to the study conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and OpenAI.

Seamans notes that the generative AI tool he would like to investigate for its effect on various jobs is the Microsoft-owned Copilot GitHub app.

“What the GitHub co-pilot does is help software developers by suggesting ideas to them as they write code, it suggests commands and code that the programmer might want to follow. Something similar to what Gmail does in emails,” she explains.

According to Seamans, this allows computer scientists to get their jobs done faster and can also help those who are studying the profession.

A fourth study by GitHub researchers evaluated the impact of generative AI in software developers.

In this test, developers were given a basic level task and encouraged to use Copilot, they completed their task 55% faster than those who did it manually.

While AI is likely to be a long way from single-handedly managing the stock market for investor money, a study called “Can ChatGPT improves investment decision from a portfolio management perspective? points out that ChatGPT is already a better wallet manager than an inexperienced person.

On the other hand, there were nearly 800,000 AI-related job opportunities in the United States in 2022, according to data compiled by Stanford University’s Institute for Centered Artificial Intelligence.

California was the state with the most AI-related hiring — more than 142,000 in 2022 — and, on average, 1.5% of job postings in any of the 50 states were AI-related.

When asked what profession she would recommend to a teenager, Seamans said she would first advise them to find a profession based on their tastes and passions.

“Aside from that, I would tell you to think about the skills that we humans have and think about investing in them. Things like judgment and critical thinking. These are skills that go into many different types of professions,” he concludes.
