A new scam is circulating forcefully through WhatsApp and has Father’s Day 2022 as an excuse. As usually happens in these cases, the message has all the air of being official, since it has the beer logo Crowneven though it is actually a social engineering attack.

Messages are replicated via contacts already infected and they are sent a card inviting them to request a cooler with Corona beer. The contest comes with a link that starts with a rather suspicious name: “wp20.ru” and announces that it will give away 5 thousand full refrigerators.

Clicking on the link indicates that to participate you must answer a questionnaire of four questions and in this way you access a “hidden prize” and “a refrigerator full of Coronitas”.

The extent of the deception was so cunning that from the company itself they had to launch a clarification through social networks, indicating it it is a fraud and they advise not to click on the link.

As the level of diffusion gained momentum, some users who received the scam message became suspicious of its veracity and started posting on social media. survey screenshot and report an apparent deception.

And although the origin of the scam originated in Mexico, the home of the drink, it soon spread to the rest of the countries of Latin America, up to Argentina.

As if to give it more credibility, at the bottom there is a comments section which, usually on this type of site, is full of positive reactions and winners who attest to the alleged experience of receiving the award.

One of the actions is “hijack” the user’s browser and then forward invasive advertising and replies via WhatsApp to other contacts. If one of your contacts shares this link, you may want to warn them to run an antivirus and remove the malicious code from their computer.

Phishing attacks are characterized by cyber threats that “disguise” themselves as famous brands to win the trust of their victims. It is a similar tactic to the story of the wolf in sheep’s clothing.

While this has been a spoofing strategy that has been used for many years, cybercriminals continue to use it, mainly because people make the mistake of believing that cybercriminals only target large companies.

Trusting that they would never be of interest to cyber attackers, they fall into fake promotions that reach their social networks or the pages they visit because they use the same logos, colors, typography and even the same way of communicating as companies.

WhatsApp conversations are end-to-end encrypted with a security code that people in that chat have. If the security code changes, it is because you have accessed the security chat from a new phone or device. And you can configure WhatsApp to notify you in that case.

In the upper corner of WhatsApp Press, where the three dots are located, click to access the Settings. There choose Accounts and under Security mark the option “Show security notifications”.
