Netflix adds new features to its technical grid. In addition to HDR and 4K, the streaming platform has just announced spatial audio expansion to all subscribers to the platform, an advantage that goes beyond the possibility of Dolby Atmos.

Through a publication on the official Sennheiser website, the company confirms its partnership with the streaming service: members who routinely receive stereo audio will now be able to enjoy a better experience.

The technology that makes this possible is known as AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio. It has come to complement the stereo sound he’s used to enjoying on the platform until now.

In this way it is enriched with a surround sound experience compatible with all devices – TV, speakers or headphones – all broadcast plans and that it does not require any special hardware to enjoy it.

This transmission and reproduction system creates a sense of three-dimensionality. That is, a type of audio similar to Dolby Surround or Dolby Atmos to achieve a more immersive effect.

This means that, in addition to using the left and right channels to hear the arrival of a vehicle, the simulation takes it one step further, as the sound can also come from behind or in front.

And although this feature will gradually reach the entire catalog, to begin its implementation, Netflix and Sennheiser have selected Stranger Things 4, the latest season of the most viewed series today, as the first link. But it is not the only one.

Total there are 27 titles available, including The Witcher, Red Alert and The Adam Project. Obviously it is expected that more and more productions will continue to be added to this group in the future.

The streaming platform will even allow you to launch a search in your app to find out what content is already enabled with this spatial audio. To separate you will have to type “spatial audio”to be displayed on the screen.

Through a post on its official blog, Netflix also added a few things regarding space audio. They explain that spatial audio comes to complement other features already on the platform, such as 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and Netflix Calibrated Mode.

How to improve Netflix audio

The whole procedure was done through software, what makes the Sennheiser system different is that it translates the two original channels into a new immersive mix, which transforms headphones or speakers into audio systems of another level.

According to the comments of the official site, Ambeo accepts any surround sound or Dolby Atmos. Next, he mixes it into stereo profiles to make them more immersive. Likewise, the original sound mix is preserved and the creative intentions behind it are respected.

If the Netflix title uses the AMBEO Spatial Audio system, it will automatically activate on the TV, replacing the classic stereo, without the user having to do anything.

Mark Paterson, head of sound mixing for Stranger Things season 4, says that “in the Atmos mix, Vecna’s voice surrounds you, which is an essential part of making it more terrifying. The fact that AMBEO can recreate it in stereo is impressive to me. “
