The MacBook Air is modernizing. After launching its first range of internally developed processors at the end of 2020 (M1), Apple launches a new version of its ultraportable, equipped with the M2 processor. The Californian takes the opportunity for an aesthetic review of the machine. However, this new MacBook Air does not replace the old one, but rather tops the range with a much higher price: 1,500 euros, compared to 1,200 euros for the MacBook Air M1.
The strengths of the MacBook Air M2
uncompromising power
While many customers now look to the durability of their products, the MacBook Air M2 could set a benchmark in the field, thanks to an advantage in both hardware and software that no PC can boast.
First of all, thanks to the M2 processor, a super-powerful version of the iPhone’s processor, above all else, which promises efficient operation over time. In fact, Apple is the only manufacturer capable of designing its processors to better integrate them into its own machines.
The power of this MacBook Air M2 is equivalent to that of much more expensive competitors (equipped with Intel chips), all without a fan and therefore without the slightest noise. This can be particularly interesting for photo editing or video editing. As the catalog of compatible video games is very small, players will have no choice but to resort to a PC.
The other advantage is obviously the software. A brick again in the hands of Apple (macOS), whose updates are compatible with seven-year-old models.
welcome new design
If the MacBook Air M1 was and still is an excellent machine, we might lament its less modern design than competing machines like the Dell XPS 13. slim. From now on, and as in the iPhone, a black notch is placed at the top of the screen to house the camera. For a smaller footprint, the screen goes from 13.3 to 13.6 inches. This slight difference is felt and appreciated in use.
This year, Apple introduces a new midnight blue color in addition to the traditional light gray, dark gray, and gold, which looks great. However, our experience with this version leads us to warn the most resistant to fingerprints, as they tend to quickly permeate this darker version.
good screen
Apple is changing its display technology little, keeping what makes it strong: perfectly balanced colors, as well as excellent brightness, slightly improved compared to the previous model. As usual, the manufacturer incorporates True Tone technology, popularized in the iPhone, which adjusts the colors according to the environment in which the user is.
Remarkable autonomy
By basing its computers on iPhone processors, Apple makes them benefit from another great feature: efficiency. In a word, the possibility of providing an excellent level of power, avoiding any overheating -hence the absence of a fan- and, above all, spending too much energy. Thanks to this strategy, the MacBook Air M2 works great and proves to be even better in the field than the already excellent MacBook Air M1.
The few days spent with the machine have particularly impressed us. Using the device all day (Web, writing articles, social networks, photo editing), we always ended the day with around 50% of battery life remaining. Even after several months and years of use, we can expect the MacBook Air M2 to survive a long day.
The return of MagSafe
At Apple, the era of legendary designer Jony Ive is over. The man, who has just ended his collaboration with the company, opted above all for clean lines. He had often frustrated customers by removing as many connectors as possible. Apple seems to be back with the return of an element that is especially appreciated by users: the MagSafe magnetic connector, which releases at the slightest pressure to prevent accidental falls.
The weaknesses of the MacBook Air M2
A disappointing webcam
On paper, Apple corrects a major deficiency in the previous MacBook Air, with a webcam that eventually switches to Full HD, versus a previous single definition HD. An essential asset as video conferencing and telecommuting have become the norm.
Unfortunately we were disappointed. In fact, the webcam of this new MacBook Air differs little from the previous model. In some cases, we actually didn’t see any difference. Images are flat and not detailed enough for a computer of this standard. An element that is not prohibitive, given the image quality that is still acceptable, especially after compression by the various video conferencing tools, but still frustrating.
Finally, one question remains in our minds: why is Apple not able to offer image quality comparable to that of the front cameras of its iPhone, even after several years?
a high price
We might have expected a MacBook Air M2 to replace the MacBook Air M1 at an equivalent price, like Apple does with its iPhones. The company has chosen to build its range differently, turning its novelty into a high-end version of the previous model. Despite the excellent performance of the computer, we would have appreciated a lower price increase (+25%) to be able to afford this new design.
Please note that Apple, as always, offers a reduced rate for students. A few weeks before the start of the school year, this MacBook Air M2 is offered at 1,384 euros.
conclusion
With its new MacBook Air, Apple keeps almost all its promises: a more modern, powerful, durable, elegant and extremely durable machine. The main disappointment is the webcam, whose quality has improved on paper, but which does not bring any significant change compared to the previous one. If design isn’t your priority, the MacBook Air M1 is probably better value for money ($1,200 vs. $1,500), thanks to comparable features and an equally powerful processor.
