Seeking inclusion, the dating app is changing its rules. Starting this summer, Bumble will allow people to identify as male, female and non-binary.

“Women make the first move.” This Bumble tagline is no longer entirely accurate. The dating app has evolved its options for more inclusion. Since the beginning of summer, it is possible to consult as a non-binary person.

On its blog, Bumble has detailed the new choices users looking for dates or just friendship can make. By creating a profile, he intends to present himself as a man, woman or non-binary person.

A disturbed algorithm

The application, which claims to be more feminist than its competitors, thus advances in the field of inclusivity. But not without difficulty, as NBC News points out. By creating these new profile categories, Bumble created a few days of misunderstanding about the service’s rules of origin.

Launched in 2014 and going public in February 2021, Bumble has become known for its main rule. In the app, only women can start a conversation in case of “match” (when two people respectively like each other). Therefore, the arrival of genderless profiles has disrupted the algorithm of the service.

In early July, complaints piled up on Twitter to challenge the platform.

A solution made by Bumble

Given these comments, Bumble has made adjustments. Now, non-binary people can send the first message to all profiles, says the Mashable site.

In the event of a match where one person is non-binary, the solution provided by Bumble allows both users to initiate the chat. But the original rule that women make the first move remains in place with profiles identified as men.

Finally, the introduction of profiles without gender has made it possible to change the practices of the Bumble BFF application, dedicated to friendly encounters. Although connections were only reserved for people of the same gender, the new platform options allow connections between all profiles, whether they are men, women or non-binary.
