The consulting firm Gartner has analyzed the computer sales figures for the second quarter of 2022 and finds a sharp decrease of 12.6% compared to the same period last year.

After two very good years, sales of laptops and desktops continue to fall in 2022. In the second quarter, the market falls sharply by 12.6% compared to 2021. Despite the 72,000 units sold, it is almost 10,000 less than last year. This is the biggest drop in nine years.

These figures were published by Gartner, a consulting and research firm specializing in the technology industry. According to their analysis, these poor results are attributable to three factors that affect all regions of the market.

Only Apple is making progress

Europe is the part of the world most affected by this disinterest in computers. The EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) market fell by 18% in the second quarter of 2022. This is equivalent to the US market (-17.5%), but more pronounced than in Japan (-10.8% ). The Asia-Pacific region fared better, with a 5.2% drop in sales.

If it remains unchanged, the top three manufacturers are suffering from the market downturn. Lenovo, HP and Dell show losses of 12.5%, 27.5% and 5.2% respectively. At the bottom of the podium, Apple is the only brand to make progress during the period (+9.3%), thanks in particular to the popularity of its M1 chip.

These data confirm the forecasts of the research firm IDC, which foresees a decrease in computer sales of 8% this year. Driven by the health crisis and the rise of teleworking, the renewal of machines seems to have come to an end.
