Facebook is testing an option that users can create multiple profiles from one account. This is a feature to attract more users, in a low general context of the social network.

The feature is intended to help users “tailor your experience based on your interests and relationships”said the Facebook spokesperson, Leonard Lamto the press.

Although Facebook prohibits users from having more than one account, the feature would allow them to create up to five profiles on their account to interact. with different themes or groups of people.

This could involve profiles (and therefore Facebook feeds) designed to interact with close friends versus co-workers or a profile dedicated to a specific hobby, such as games. Bloomberg first reported testing the new feature the following Thursday.

The test comes as Facebook’s parent company Meta experiences slowdown in earnings growth and stiff competition from rivals like TikTok. which is fighting for the time and attention of users.

In February Meta surprised investors by seeing an unusual stagnation in quarterly user growth, a trend that reversed slightly in the first quarter of this year.

Meta is in the midst of transitioning to a company focused on a virtual, augmented reality-enabled “metaverse” future, rather than social media.

But it must continue to profit from its existing platforms to fund investments in that vision. The company recently worked to further integrate Facebook and Instagram, facilitating the discovery of content by users and interact with communities on both platforms, for example by viewing Instagram Reels in the Facebook feed.

Users of the new multiple profiles feature will be able to create unique names for each profile they create, but will still be subject to Facebook’s rules that prohibit deceptive representation andto the representation of public figures, according to La m. People’s core profiles have yet to adhere to the platform rule to use the name they use regularly.

There will also be some Facebook features, such as Facebook Dating and the ability to create a page, only available for users’ main profiles.

If a user violates the platform’s community guidelines in a profile, their entire account will be subject to disciplinary action.

“Anyone who uses Facebook should keep following our rules, ”Lam said.

The company is testing the new feature with users in select countries, according to L am, although it hasn’t specified where or when the option will be widely available.

The trial version will not change the way Meta calculates the monthly or daily active user totals, which are reported in the earnings reports. The multi-profile effort is just a test for now and includes a few US users and a handful of other countries.
