The Sims 4 continue your journey towards greater inclusion. An upcoming update to the life simulation game will introduce new customization options when creating your avatar: sexual orientation.
Players will now have the ability to set whether their character will be attracted to women or men. And this regardless of gender. This new addition is part of Maxis developers’ desire to improve the representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in their game, published by Electronic Arts.
best inclusion
These changes will be available starting July 28, when the High School Years expansion is released.
The sexual orientation of the Sims will allow you to choose an avatar’s attraction to this or that gender, but also if they want to have sex with female characters, male characters or both.
An option will also allow the character to explore romantic relationships, i.e. changing sexual orientation as interactions occur in the game.
For several months, The Sims 4 has been working to improve inclusivity. Earlier in the year, the “Marriage” extension featured a lesbian couple. This choice had prevented the developers from releasing the game in Russia, given the country’s laws.
No non-binary avatar yet
More recently, the game introduced an option to choose avatar pronouns. It was then a first step in the process of representing new identities.
The game’s lead designer also mentions technical limitations that prevent the creation of non-binary characters. Released in September 2014, The Sims 4 it still imposes creating a male or female avatar. Created with a binary take on the genres of the time, the game now wants to find the right mechanics to fully support non-binary Sims.
