Some players used non-fungible tokens to offer exclusive skins or worlds. As of now, these technologies are no longer allowed in the game.

Not all companies want to give in to the sirens of NFTs. Mojang, the studio behind the popular game Minecraft, announced in a press release, published on July 20 and disseminated by the specialized medium Kotaku, to want to ban non-fungible tokens from its platform. NFTs are digital certificates of ownership, which can be applied to any asset (for example drawings, photos or even simple screenshots), often used for speculative purposes.

For these reasons, the studio has decided to completely ban all blockchain and NFT-related technologies. These tokens were used in particular to offer appearances, objects or “maps”, that is, unique worlds, which are at the heart of the principle of Minecraft.

A “benevolent and inclusive” experience

If a large number of companies have embarked on the concept, it worries other players, particularly because of its propensity to promote financial scams.

“Unreliable”

This is also one of the reasons given by the Mojang study to justify its decision. “The speculation and investment mindset around NFTs detracts from the gaming experience and encourages profits, which we believe is inconsistent with the long-term joy and satisfaction of our players.” The company also says it is concerned that some of these tokens are “unreliable” after seeing NFT sales made at artificially inflated prices.

Blockchain, on the other hand, is a storage technology that allows digital information to be recorded transparently and securely. Therefore, the NFTs are recorded on the blockchain.

Minecraft is a “sandbox” game, where the player evolves in an infinite world and has the freedom to create whatever he wants. Creations are made using “blocks”, the hallmark of the game. most downloaded game in the world, with 238 million copies sold since its launch in 2009.
