The Cnil, vigilant of the private life of the French, imposed a fine of 175,000 euros on the car rental company Ubeeqo (Europcar group) for having geolocated its clients “almost permanently”, it indicated, this Thursday, July 21, in a press release. .

Ubeeqo, a specialist in short-term rental in Paris and several major European cities, “collected data related to the geolocation of the rented vehicle, every 500 meters when the vehicle was in motion, when the engine was turned on and off or when the doors were opened “. open and closed,” said the Cnil during a check.

Ubeeqo, a French company founded in 2008 and which joined the Europcar group in 2015, argued that this data allowed “to ensure the maintenance and operation of the carsharing service”, to “find the vehicle in case of theft”. and to “provide assistance to customers in the event of an accident”, according to the Cnil.

The Commission considered “that none of these purposes justifies such fine geolocation data collection” and that the company Ubeeqo had in particular violated the “principle of data minimization” enshrined in the RGPD, the European regulation on data protection.

In relation to the rest of the European data protection authorities, the restricted formation of the Commission decided to sanction the company with a fine of 175,000 euros, it made public.
