From now on, the videos posted on the social network will be Reels. The TikTok-inspired format is becoming the norm on Instagram to keep users on your app longer.

Reels are now the format that takes precedence on Instagram. As of July 21, videos of less than 15 minutes – that is, practically all of them – will be gradually shared in the TikTok star format. This change confirms the slow transformation of the social network into a direct competitor of the Chinese platform.

detailed in Twitter For the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, this transformation is not surprising. In June, classic videos got a new full-screen display. But it is precisely through experiments carried out since the beginning of July that the project of imposing the publication of reels materialized.

Step up content recommendation

For Instagram, the challenge is first and foremost to keep users’ attention on their app instead of letting them escape TikTok’s, according to The Verge. And for this, the company will intensify the use of its recommendation algorithm.

Just like on Facebook, more and more posts that a person might be interested in will be highlighted in their feed. At the expense of your friends’ photos and videos.

Instagram encourages its users to post Reels by making it easy for them to do so. Templates are now available to make up for the lack of inspiration. The social network adds a function to use both the front and rear cameras of the phones. Thus it is possible to film a scene and its reaction in a single shot.
