It’s an email that has pissed off a lot of customers. On July 26, Amazon Prime subscribers found out that the price of the e-commerce giant’s service was going to increase. As of September 15, 69.90 euros per year or 6.99 euros per month will be requested compared to the current 49 euros or 5.99 euros.
But Amazon Prime isn’t just about priority delivery of your online purchases. The subscription gives you access to Prime Video, to watch movies and series, to Amazon Music Prime, to listen to songs, or to Prime Gaming, to receive video games every month and subscribe to a streamer on Twitch.
So BFMTV does the math to find out if, depending on your Amazon Prime usage, the service is still worth it despite its price increase.
- I buy online
First scenario, Amazon Prime only serves you in the context of eCommerce. You get free priority delivery with your subscription. This option costs 7.99 euros for non-Amazon Prime subscribers. Despite the price increase, the annual subscription is interesting from nine purchases in the year. For a monthly subscription, you would have to pay twice a month to see a profit.
- I watch series and movies on Prime Video
Prime Video is the cheapest video on demand platform on the market. Its main competitors, Netflix and Disney +, exhibit an entry ticket at 8.99 euros per month. It is two euros more than the monthly subscription to Amazon Prime. During the year, you earn 24 euros, and even 37.98 euros if you opt for the annual subscription. Of course, this calculation does not take into account the exclusivity of each of the platforms, but only the access to a streaming service.
- I read digital books on my tablet
The Amazon Prime subscription is also Prime Reading. This service makes books in digital format available to all owners of a Kindle tablet. With more than a thousand novels, police novels and thrillers, Amazon’s offer saves between 0.99 and 7.99 euros per book. Taking a low average of 2.99 euros, the price of your Amazon Prime subscription will be reimbursed to you as soon as you read 24 books, that is, two per month. It is also necessary to take into account the most recent launches that have a higher purchase price and therefore mechanically reduce the number of readings before reaching a certain profitability.
- I listen to streaming music
With Amazon Music Prime it is possible to listen to a catalog of two million titles included in the Amazon Prime subscription. Despite hundreds of playlists or an offline mode to download the songs on its app, the offering struggles to compete with the paid version of the Amazon Music Unlimited service. Not included in Amazon Prime, this offer of 9.99 euros (same as Spotify or Deezer) per month raises the number of titles available in HD quality to 90 million. So this service is an added bonus, but not a purchase argument for committing to Amazon Prime.
- I play video games and watch Twitch
One last reason to subscribe to Amazon Prime, access to Prime Gaming. This service dedicated to gamers offers monthly video games. In July, four games are offered for a total purchase price of 72.46 euros. Or more than the annual subscription to Amazon Prime after its price increase to 69.90 euros. In addition, the annual event of Prime Days offers and promotions on July 12 and 13 allowed you to collect 30 additional titles for free.
Finally, Prime Gaming allows Twitch viewers to support one creator each month. Therefore, a subscription to a channel of the live streaming platform is offered to all Amazon Prime subscribers. This allows a saving of 3.99 euros per month, or 47.88 euros per year.
- I use Amazon Prime as much as possible.
Let’s take the example of a person who wants to use their subscription for a month. Make a purchase on Amazon with priority shipping (7.99 euros), watch a few movies and a series (6.99 euros), read a book in Kindle format (2.99 euros), support your favorite streamer (3, 99 euros) and collect two of the games offered through Prime Gaming (about 20 euros). The savings made would be 41.96 euros.
On paper, Amazon Prime provides access to a host of services. However, you should consider your own usage before subscribing to the service. But as our example shows, the most greedy users will still be paying for their subscription in a few weeks.
