The Austrian NGO Noyb is again taking legal action against websites in Europe that use the “OneTrust” banner software. It had already filed more than 400 similar complaints in 2021.

The Austrian online privacy NGO Noyb announced on Tuesday, August 9, the filing of 226 new complaints against websites in Europe with cookie rules deemed “misleading”, a year after a similar action.

A frustrating online experience

“Being online has become a frustrating experience” in Europe, with “annoying barriers designed to make it extremely difficult to reject cookies everywhere on the web,” the NGO added.

It requires that Internet users be clearly offered the “yes/no” option to cookies – computer trackers that allow targeted advertising – as provided for in a European regulation that came into force in 2018.

Add cookie rejection buttons

By August 2021, Noyb had filed more than 400 complaints and no decisions had yet been made, though “many sites have adapted their settings by adding dismiss buttons” since then, he said.

Statistics published in 2021 show that 3% of users accept cookies, but that more than 90% of them are forced to do so because they cannot easily reject them.
