It is a date that many have been waiting for. Facebook announced in a press release that its Messenger messaging solution will use end-to-end encryption by default starting in 2023. Messages and calls made from the app will thus be more secure.
An extension of testing on Instagram
The option has been available for messages since October 2016, but each user had to activate it manually. After tests launched in the summer of 2021, end-to-end encrypted communications for voice and video exchanges have been available to everyone since the beginning of the year.
Starting next week, default end-to-end encryption tests will be implemented. The most frequent chats of the test sample users will be automatically encrypted.
Last year, Instagram (which belongs to the Meta group, just like Facebook and Whatsapp) was also entitled to a small-scale end-to-end encryption test. In February 2022, they were expanded to adults from Russia and Ukraine. This same press release warns of a future extension of this test to new countries, but also to all accounts, whether the user is an adult or not.
An encrypted discussion file
Messenger also introduced on August 11 the ability to recover secure files from encrypted conversations. At the moment they are only stored on the devices, so the chat histories could be found in case of loss or change of phone.
The company clarifies that the use of secure storage does not allow you to access the exchanges in question.
